Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo issued the orders hours after seven people,among them four police officers, were killed by gunmen in Witu on Friday night. "Due to insecurity in Lamu County, I David Mwole Kimaiyo, the Inspector General of Police of the National Police Service in accordance with the provision of the constitution section 8(1) of the public order Act Caps 56 laws of Kenya do hereby issue a curfew orders within Lamu County from 20th July 2014 to 20th August from 6.30pm to 6.30am," reads the statement from IG's office.
"Every person within Lamu County is directed to remain indoors during the period the curfew is in force except under and in accordance with terms and conditions of a written permit granted by the County Commander," Kimaiyo ordered.
Kimaiyo also said Boni forest and other forests in the area are a no go zone.
At least 100 people have been killed by gunmen since mid-June. Al Shabaab terror group has claimed responsibility for the attacks but the government has maintained the killings are being carried out by local politicians.
Lamu governor Issa Timmay has been arraigned in court in connection with Mpeketoni attacks that left 65 people dead in June.
The terror group claimed responsibility for the Friday killings.
"The attack was in response to Kenya's claim that it deployed more troops in the coast and thus tightened security," Sheikh Abdiasis Abu Musab, spokesman for al Shabaab's military operations told Reuters.
"Kenya also lied by saying it destroyed al Shabaab bases there - that is propaganda."
Al Shabaab has vowed to carry out a campaign of attacks to punish Kenya for sending its troops into Somalia, where Kenyan soldiers are fighting the militants as part of an African Union peacekeeping force.
